Every Saturday morning staff and pupils from Crawford College Lonehill try and change the world through their community outreach programme.
“They meet during the week at school, and sign up for weekend events [that have been organised in the community],” said Robyn Swanepoel, who is in charge of marketing and admissions for the school.
“Crawford College Lonehill are extremely grateful to these dedicated group of students and staff who make a difference in people’s lives.”
Pupils and staff who are interested in making a difference have to get up early on Saturday mornings in order to catch the bus that will take them to that weekend’s event – no easy feat for a teenager!

Since the school year began in mid-January, the outreach team has been involved in several different community upliftment programs, including:
- Interacting with the abused, neglected or abandoned animals at Kitty and Puppy Haven in Midrand
- Spent the day at the Olico Youth Centre in Diepsloot, where they helped children from a number of Diepsloot schools learn more about human rights
- Packaged meals at the Stop Hunger Now offices in Johannesburg, which is an organisation that aims to eradicate child hunger in Southern Africa
- Sold badges to their schoolmates to raise funds and awareness for Childhood Cancer Day on 15 February, with all proceeds going to Choc (The Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa)
- Worked at a second-hand clothing sale that was hosted in aid of the Christways children’s home in Turfontein
- And most recently, they have spent two weekends in a row interacting and spending time with the children from the Malaika Orphanage near Hillbrow.
Crawford College Lonehill is incredibly proud of the job these volunteers do in service to the community.
“Each of these students has realised what it is like to give of themselves and their time, and also to not take anything in life for granted.” concluded Swanepoel.
