Guard concerned about Douglasdale homeless woman

FOURWAYS – Help find a homeless woman who may need assistance.

Sibusiso Khumalo, a security guard in Douglasdale, noticed a homeless woman who was spending nights on the corner of Hornbill Road and Galloway Avenue.

Because he was worried about the situation, he took a video of her. What concerned Khumalo was that to stay warm, she was making a fire warm behind transformers and immediately notified Fourways Review. He said that he can completely understand that she is making a fire to stay warm, since the past few days have been rainy ones, but he is afraid that if the transformer catches fire, it could be disastrous.

The space seen here is where a woman takes shelter almost every evening and makes a warm, yet dangerous fire next to the transformers.

Khumalo added that when he spoke with the woman her stories sounded confused and he was afraid that she might be mentally ill.

Unfortunately, when Fourways Review went to investigate, the woman had already gone. Khumalo said that she hadn’t been there the last three days.

When Khumalo spoke to her, she told him that she spends her time at the Sandton Bible Church during the day, and then at night she sleeps by her fire, but when it rains she sleeps under the shelter of the Total garage next to Pick n Pay in Douglasdale. After speaking with the management of the Sandton Bible Church and speaking to some staff at the Total garage on Leslie Avenue, it was clear that no one had seen this woman, which confirms Khumalo’s theory of her stories not adding up.

It is clear to see that there is a fire being made on a constant basis behind the transformers, and it is clear to see that someone might be sleeping there in the evening.

If any resident has seen anything or comes across this woman, please inform the police immediately, urged Jean Berdou, the chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF). “We urge the community to step in and help out in situations like this because, if we keep leaving it for the next person to deal with, the situation will fester and become a social sore,” explained Berdou.
