Ensure your safety daily

JOHANNESBURG – Don't let criminals spoil your day, warns ADT

Private security company, ADT, warns South Africans to stay alert all the time.

Theunis Kotze, general manager for ADT Inland Region said, “Opportunistic criminal elements will always be on the lookout for people who appear to be distracted. No matter what you have planned for the day, you should always be aware of your surroundings and of the people around you.”

When travelling in your vehicle, you also always need to be aware of your surroundings and ensure that your car is locked properly before leaving a parking area, he siad. “It is also best to avoid areas that are isolated as these could put you and your loved one in a vulnerable and dangerous situation.”

  • If you are planning to go out on this special day, here are some tips:
  • Always inform friends and/or family members where you will be travelling to and what time to expect you home
  • Keep a form of identification on your person, as well as your mobile phone and small change for emergency situations
  • Memorise important numbers such as those of your parents, partner or a close friend, as well as emergency services. Programme these numbers into your mobile phone as well
  • If your children are staying home for the evening, ensure that they have learnt how to use the alarm system and have all emergency numbers on them
  • If you are meeting for the first time, it is best to meet in a public setting and let others know where you are and what time to expect you home.

When returning home from an evening out, keep these tips in mind:

  • If you know that you could possibly return home after dark, turn an outside light on before leaving. Alternatively, ensure someone is there to meet you at the door
  • Approximately 2km from your home, turn down the volume of the car radio to allow for better awareness of your surroundings
  • Be wary of suspicious individuals or vehicles as you approach your driveway
  • If you notice anything out of the ordinary, drive away. Go to the local police station or contact your security provider to have an officer meet you and accompany you to your home
  • Once home, let your family member or friend know that you have arrived safely.
