Tiny art celebrates big birthday

The Miniature Art Society of South Africa (Massa) celebrated 25 years of existence recently when the society hosted its annual general meeting on 18 February at the Eden Village Hall in Meadowdale.
As the name suggests, Massa is a collection of people who are interested in learning about and creating art on very small canvasses, some as small as 40mm by 40mm.
The society was started in 1992 by Charmian Kennealy and Valerie Christie, after the former had participated in miniature art exhibitions in America and Canada. They also attended the celebration.
Today, Massa has almost 70 members across South Africa, including Lonehill and Fourways. Last year they donated the proceeds of an exhibition to Saving Animals Through Art in South Africa, a local charity.
“I am absolutely overjoyed to be here today,” said Kennealy.
“I am so proud to have handed the baton on to the people who now organise [the society and its activities] so well.”
Christie echoed the same sentiments. “I love watching how the younger generation [now at Massa’s helm] is improving what we started.”
Although most of the AGM was taken up with the society’s agenda, members did get to celebrate the momentous occasion with tea and sweet eats. One of the members had her sister bake a special cake for the occasion. The three-tier cake was decorated with edible versions of some of the art that the society has produced over the years.
Current chairwoman, Leonora de Lange, took some time between general announcements to thank members for their years of service before she began speaking about what the society could expect from this year’s exhibition, which is held annually by Massa as a means of fundraising for charity.
“Because we are celebrating our silver anniversary this year, the challenge for this year’s submissions [to enter the annual miniature art exhibition] is that they will need to feature a bit of silver somewhere.”
