Khubeka makes clean sweep

FOURWAYS – Hirsch's monthly competition helps domestic workers grow and build their self-worth.

Fikile Khubeka was named domestic worker of the month after her employer and Lonehill resident, Gerda Matil, nominated her for Hirsch’s Fourways-sponsored competition.

Matil said Khubeka, who has worked for her family for about 27 years, was not only a domestic worker but was also a friend and almost like family. The award is Hirsch’s way of giving back to the community.

“There is a monthly winner, where each winner gets a R300 Hirsch’s voucher and a certificate. These winners go forward for the title of Hirsch’s domestic worker of the year, which has a prize of R5 000,” said Sharron Dingle, Hirsch’s spokesperson.

The company also conducts workshops where it provides training and information to enhance domestic workers’ skills and productivity. According to Dingle, domestic workers are given training on security, basic technology, and on how to care for the home and appliances.

“It is all about helping them grow and building their self-worth, and giving them real skills that they can use on their CVs,” said Dingle.
