Diepsloot Combined School, along with other schools in South Africa, is celebrating last year’s matric results and is full of enthusiasm for what the new year holds.
The school started its first day of school vibrantly singing gospel songs.
Faith Mazibuko, MEC for the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, joined the school in song and in singing the national anthem.
Mazibuko educated the schoolchildren about the meaning of the national anthem and told them that when they sing it they should show respect. She added that the national anthem represented all the people who worked very hard for everything that the country currently stood for.
“We must respect the national anthem and respect starts with you,” said Mazibuko.

She encouraged the children to have a positive attitude. “You are the future leaders and must strive to be better citizens every day. You must strive for a healthy mind and healthy body every day. Keep away from drugs, alcohol and even hubbly bubbly.”
She warned the schoolgirls about the seven B’s. “Books Before Boys, Because Boys Bring Babies,” said Mazibuko.
The principal of the school, Noel Maringa, then addressed the schoolchildren and teachers.
“We commit ourselves to education,” said Maringa. “Some of the learners with their parents will be blessed with new school attire and there are more presents coming the school’s way. I urge all of the learners of Diepsloot Combined School to spend as much time as they can learning as much as they can.”
Unfortunately, the school experienced a decrease in the pass rate last year, ending the year with an 84.84 per cent pass rate, but according to Maringa, plans were in place to reach a 100 per cent pass rate this year.
