Blocked storm water drain a resident’s nightmare

LONEHILL– Read what Ward 112 councillor Candice James had to say about a blocked storm water drain in the area.

In the wake of the heavy rain experienced these past few weeks which led to flooding in the area, Ward 112 councillor Candice James shared her concerns about the drainage systems in the area.

This after the councillor came to a Lonehill resident’s aid whose house was flooded due to a neighbour’s collapsed wall.

James explained that on 10 November, she was contacted by Ronel van den Berg who is a managing agent for Ravens Hill Complex on Turley Road, who told her that their complex’s wall had been washed away by the storm water which they believed was caused by a blocked storm water drain.

“I received pictures of the damage that the flood had done and on 11 November I decided to go onsite. I saw the damaged wall and while I was there I noticed flooding in the house in front of the complex.”

James explained that when she approached the owner of the flooded house, who wished to remain anonymous, she was extremely stressed by the amount of water in her house. “The owner’s friend was there to help but I decided to get a hold of Johannesburg Road Agency and asked that they conduct an inspection of the blocked storm water drain which we believe caused the flood, resulting in the wall collapsing,” she said.

She added that the agency arrived on 12 and 13 November to remove rubbish that was blocking the storm water drain. “The rubbish has been removed but items washed down the drain from Witkoppen Road continue to be a problem. I have, however, asked Province to look into putting a grill on the storm water drain in order to stop large items from being washed in.”

James further added that the pipe travels under Turley Road into a servitude and the entrance to these pipes was covered by at least 10m of vegetation. “This servitude needs to be attended to and the river connected to the drain that flows into Lonehill Parks also concerns me,” she explained.

James concluded that she has requested the roads agency and City Parks look into the area as soon as possible as there might be more flooding.

The roads agency and City Parks are yet to give comment to this story.
