Watch-theft syndicate

SANDTON – Another case of a person being robbed for his watch has come to light.

After a man was recently shot in the leg and his Rolex watch stolen (Sandton Chronicle, Week ending 28 October), another theft of a watch has come to light, highlighting the trend.

On 10 September at around midday a man was having his motorcycle washed at a car wash at the Morningview Car Wash. Two armed men in balaclavas approached the victim and robbed him at gunpoint of his watch. They didn’t take anything else. The incident took less than a minute. The victim has identified the vehicle as a white Audi.

“My husband was not wearing a Rolex but a Tag Heuer valued at about R30 000 and the perpetrators may have mistaken it for a Rolex,” said the wife of the victim.

The owner of the car wash – who wishes to remain anonymous – said the perpetrators must have followed the victim. “He was busy watching his bike being washed when he was approached by the men and robbed. It seems to be the same modus operandi as the case where the man was shot in the leg,” said the owner.

A case has been opened at the Sandton Police Station.
