The first event will be bus and minibus taxi driver safety training. Some 100 drivers in the public transport sector will be recognised for their safety records, driving skills and service and will take place on 8 October and is by invitation only.

On 14 October, the political leadership of the City will join the Johannesburg Road Agency for an ‘extreme makeover’ of streets in Zandspruit. The activities will include repainting kerbs and road signs, the removal of illegal advertising and scrubbing off graffiti and will happen.

The agency will conduct campaigns between 15 and 20 October in malls around the city where residents can give feedback of how issues such as transport, potholes or service failures affect them. This will also raise awareness about the dangers of vandalism and cable theft.

On 21 October, the annual Kasi to Kasi public transport adventure will be held where teams compete by visiting city landmarks using public transport. It is to encourage people who don’t use public transport daily. There are no prizes and all participants receive a token of appreciation.

Makhuba will be meeting with community stakeholders and residents who live or work on Koma Road in Soweto on 22 October, where there have been a number of safety issues and she will hear about the challenges residents face and develop solutions.

Two activities will promote public transport.

The second activity on 26 October will see senior citizens from White City hosted by Makhuba on a Rea Vaya bus ride to Park Station where they will board a Gautrain.
