MUST READ: Wits polls go ahead as interdict is denied

JOHANNEBURG – Wits University will poll students and staff to gauge how many people want the the academic year to resume.

Wits University has began polling students as to whether they want the university to reopen or not. The poll has been running since 7am today and will close at 4pm.

According to a statement by the university, the results will be verified by Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo, one of the top five auditing companies in the country as the IEC is unable to assist Wits with this process.

According to former SRC president Ncebo Dlamini, The SRC’s attempt to stop the poll was denied by the court. This as Wits University said that the poll was to gather the opinions of students on the matter of reopening the university.

“When we got to court the university said it is no longer a referendum, they changed its name to an opinion poll and said that the poll will not have an effect on the protest, they just want to hear the opinions of the students.

We don’t have a reason to interdict an opinion poll as the court discovered that Habib does not have the powers to call a referendum and that he has also lied that he had spoken to IEC, so in short, we did not lose but we have won as there is no longer a referendum but an opinion poll that won’t affect the protest,” he said.

However, Professor Adam Habib has come out saying that if the university does not reopen in the next couple of days a point of no return would be reached.

The results of the poll is expected to be released on 30 September.
