Cementing knowledge

DIEPSLOOT – Pupils at the Diepsloot West Secondary School were donated a mobile science lab by PPC, in the hope that it will help them with their studies.

Diepsloot West Secondary School science pupils will now be able to perform science syllabus experiments on their own campus after Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC) donated a mobile laboratory to the school on the 21 September.

Grade 9, 10 and 11 pupils were excited to receive the donation of a self-sufficient and portable lab on wheels, which was presented to the school’s principal, Mr Ngwenya, by Darryll Castle, CEO of PPC. “Providing access to quality, meaningful education remains one of our continent’s and country’s greatest challenges,” Castle said during the handover.

“For education to create a life and a future of possibility for our children, corporates need to work with government and communities to develop the skills they will need to realise their dreams. It is our hope that today’s donation will unlock new career options for many of these learners and impact their lives well into the future,” said Castle.

This was the first of several such donations planned for various schools reaching 8 500 pupils across South Africa, and was organised in partnership with numerous parties, including the Department of Education, Brainwave, Smartlabs and the Hip Hop Foundation.

The mobile lab will be used for practical classroom demonstrations in the subjects of chemistry, physics and life sciences, and will aid in revision in preparation for exams. The company has also made sustainability a priority in the lab’s future, as Brainwave will offer pupils workshops and psychometric analyses to assist pupils with their subject selection and career guidance.

“Through this psychometric analysis assessment, pupils will be better equipped to select subjects that are suited to their personalities, helping them to embark on the career path that’s right for them,” explained Kabira Akoob, PPC’s corporate social investment manager.

“This speaks directly to our short- to medium-term plan of then offering bursaries to deserving matriculants from these schools who want to pursue PPC-related careers, feeding into our employment and recruitment strategy.”
