City Lodge Hotel donates to charities

FOURWAYS – the City Lodge Hotel Group has given donations to three South African charities on behalf of guests.

The City Lodge Hotel group donated a total of R430 000 to three South African charities on behalf of its guests, at a handover ceremony held at the City Lodge Hotel in Fourways on Friday, 16 September.

The three charities were The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), which received R199 600, the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa (HPCA), which received R140 000 and Food & Trees for Africa, which received R91 000.

“This year’s donation will go towards funding our 14 cancer-care lodges around the country, which assist people when they have first been diagnosed with cancer,” said Cansa’s Munnik Marais.

Cansa’s donation was raised through the Cuppa for Cansa campaign, which ran from July last year through to the end of June this year, and which saw the City Lodge Hotel group making a donation to the non-profit organisation (NPO) every time a Road Lodge guest bought a cup of tea or coffee.

The donations made to HPCA and Food & Trees were funded every time a hotel guest made online bookings on the City Lodge website. The guest could choose which of the two organisations would receive the donation during the booking process.

According to Zodwa Sithole of the HPCA, the money that the NPO received will go toward mentoring staff at the organisation’s 146 member hospices around the country and will also be used to purchase scales for measuring the weight of babies who have been affected by tuberculosis (TB).

Robyn Hills from Food & Trees said their donation will be used to support up to 50 community food gardeners in the Evaton area in south-west Johannesburg. “This will include providing them with seeds, teaching them how to harvest their own seeds and giving them seminars on soil health and nutrition,” Hills added.

Both fundraising campaigns are ongoing. Cansa has been receiving similar support since 2003 and has been given a total of R1.77 million through the years, while HPCA has received R694 285 and Food & Trees has received R417 540 since 2012.
