Douglasdale officers frustrated over burst sewerage pipe

DOUGLASDALE – Douglasdale police officers are repeatedly getting drenched in sewerage and seek a permanent solution.

Douglasdale Police Station officers have to contend with foul odours every two weeks as pipes situated at the police station’s gate regularly block and release sewage.

Spokesperson for the Douglasdale Police Station, Captain Balan Muthan said the pipes block every two weeks, despite being temporarily fixed on different occasions.

The pipe was, however, fixed on 23 August – much to the relief of the officers. “They came and unblocked it this week, but the problem always plays itself out every two weeks,” said Muthan.

Some police officers said the pipe burst occasionally and expressed hope that a permanent solution would be found soon. “If you come back in the next few days, you will find it busted again. This is now a fortnightly occurrence,” said one female officer who declined to be identified as she is not authorised to speak to the media.

When Fourways Review visited the police station on 24 August, fresh soil was covering the area of the burst pipe. There was also an open, cesspit with fresh plaster.

City of Johannesburg’s stakeholder relations and communications manager, Tidimalo Chuene, had not yet responded to queries about the recurring pipe bursts by the time of publication.
