DA’s Mafokwane in a landslide victory in Ward 115

FOURWAYS - DA's Matome Mafokwane wins by a landslide.

Democratic Alliance’s dreadlocked candidate, Matome Mafokwane, has just posted a landslide victory for his blue party.

The Ward 115 councillor walked away with more than 10 000 votes in the 3 August municipal elections leaving less than 1 500 ballots for his contenders to share. These provisional results are according to what was posted at the polling stations of Ward 115.

The former Ward 96 councillor, however, apportioned credit to the DA and residents of Ward 115. “This is their victory and not mine alone. The people in my ward have voted for change and, indeed, change is what they will get,” said the visibly jubilant Mafokwane.

“I am privileged to be given a chance to serve them and I want to declare from the outset that I am available for the community members on a 24/7 basis.”

The youthful councillor extended an invitation to his community members to join him in coming up with a master plan for good service delivery. “I appeal to the community to forward me ideas on how best service delivery could be improved. They must be active stakeholders in service delivery,” he said.

Mafokwane has already hit the ground running and is also inviting members of his new community to become involved. “In the next 60 to 90 days, I encourage residents of my ward to avail themselves to serve in ward committees.”

What makes Mafokwane tick? The married dreadlocked councillor declined to venture much into his personal life and instead opted to sing the praises of the 1976 youth who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of South Africa. “I refuse to believe the past generations sacrificed their lives for the youth of today so that we can be trapped in poverty and a life of drugs.

“I say this because the youth of ’76 had very little to celebrate but we, the youth of today, have so much to be proud of, opportunities are endless and it all boils down to mindset,” he said to Fourways Review in June.

The father of two sees himself as an improver of the quality of people’s lives and is convinced that the Democratic Alliance has the willingness and capacity to bring change to the lives of Johannesburg residents. “I believe in the future of this great city and feel a true change can be delivered by the DA.”

Ward 115 includes Cedar lakes, Douglasdale, Fourways, Jukskei Park and Waterford Estate.
