Sunninghill Village robbers nabbed

SUNNINGHILL – Spar in Sunninghill robbed under cover of elections.

ARMED robbers pounced on cashiers at Sunninghill Village Spar and fled with an undisclosed amount of money from the tills on 3 August as the nation was busy voting.

The management team of Sunninghill Village, however, said the suspects were now under lock and key. The prompt response by the centre’s security officers and members of Sandton police led to the apprehension of the suspects.

“Due to the swift action from our security team and the police, the suspects have been apprehended and are currently in police custody,” said the management team in a statement on 4 August.

The management said the five robbers took a risk and targetted the shop during a time when the centre was crawling with additional police members on electoral security duties.

The centre management said no injuries or causalities were sustained. “We are grateful that no one was hurt during this incident; the centre is open and operating as normal.

“We would like to reassure the community that the safety of our customers is our priority.” They, however, shied away from disclosing the exact amount that was stolen.

The alarm over the robbery was raised by Ward 132 councillor, Annette Deppe who contacted Fourways Review at about 7pm, immediately after the robbers had come and gone.

Sandton Police Station spokesman, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela did not have details of the case when Fourways Review contacted him.

Maphakela promised to investigate and come back to this paper with further details of the event and arrest.

This is an ongoing story.
