Woman killed in house robbery

GLENFERNESS – A woman has died after four armed men broke into her house.

Midrand police are investigating a case of house robbery and murder after a woman was allegedly shot and killed, and her friend tied up and assaulted, during an armed robbery at a two-storey house in Glenferness on 24 July.

According to a statement from Matome Tlamela, communications officer for Midrand Police Station, the tenant and her male friend were at home watching movies at about 8pm when they heard loud banging on the front door. Four unknown men gained entry into the house by allegedly forcing the front door open.

“The tenant was allegedly shot while trying to close the second kitchen door on the attackers, but did not die of her wounds immediately,” Tlamela explained.

The friend attempted to run up the stairs to the second floor of the house, but was caught by the robbers and tied up with electrical cords, and a jacket was used to cover his head. The suspects then allegedly hit him repeatedly while demanding cash and access to the safe.

The police are unable to release the names of the victims to the public, but said that no suspects have been arrested yet.

It was not confirmed if anything had been stolen from the house.

“We would like to appeal to the community to come forward if they have any information about these events,” added Tlamela.
