Ride for a cause, animal lovers!

FOURWAYS – Get your bicycle shorts on for a good cause and help raise money for your local animal charities.

Established in 2014, Barking Army raises funds for different animal welfare organisations and recently identified an innovative way to benefit key animal rescue organisations and raise awareness for them.

This innovative opportunity came in the form of the 947 Cycle Challenge.

After the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa and The Pink Drive raised funds through volunteers riding for their cause in this cycle challenge, Barking Army was convinced that there were enough animal-loving South African cyclists in the country to successfully run a similar initiative and raise sufficient funds.

Barking Army’s conviction proved correct, and in their first year, they raised more than R300 000 for their beneficiaries.

As the organisation prepares to compete in the challenge for the third consecutive year, goals have been set to make this year the most successful one yet. Barking Army aims to raise R500 000 for their beneficiaries, which include Husky Rescue South Africa, Woodrock Animal Rescue and Pets Johannesburg.

“In creating a non-profit organisation such as Barking Army and bringing three charities on board, we benefit from economies of scale from a cost perspective – as we all know, most things are cheaper when bought in bulk,” said Barking Army founding member, Tarryn Day.

“Through Barking Army, we have been successful in reducing expenses and driving more funds to the participating charities.”

This year, the Barking Army team and their charities took the next step in maximising profits and hosted a movie night premiere at Montecasino, with enough funds raised at the event to cover all of Barking Army’s running costs for the 947 Cycle Challenge. A second movie night will be hosted in August to add to the exisiting profits.

For the moment, Barking Army is appealing to all avid cyclists prepared to ride for a cause to join the Barking Army cyclists in the cycle challenge. Those interested will have access to the Barking Army’s hospitality tent and services, including the collection of race packs, and will be offered an earlier start time.

Cyclists will also receive a branded cycling shirt valued at R500 from the charity.
