Meet the ANC’s pick for Ward 115 councillor

NORTH RIDING – Meet Buhle Dlamini, the ANC's nomination for councillor of Ward 115.

He’s a father, a former Wits University footballer, accountant, Epsom Downs resident, non-profit organisation founder and ANC member, Buhle Dlamini has done a lot and now might also have the title of Ward 115 councillor under his belt.

Dlamini (34) is the ANC’s nominee for the upcoming elections on 3 August. He will run for the position of Ward 115 councillor and will manage Douglasdale, Fourways west of William Nicol Drive, North Riding, Epsom Downs, Jukskei Park, Joburg North, Norscot, Norscot Slopes, Noordhang, Hoogland and parts of Olivedale.

The post is currently filled by the Democratic Alliance’s Chris Satana.

“A ward councillor should be the interface between the Metro, the government of the city and local areas,” said Dlamini at the ANC offices in North Riding.

“If I was elected, I’d want to make sure the decisions made and projects planned at city level filtered down to local residents so they could also benefit from them.”

One such citywide project he would like to see brought more into the ward is the Jozi@Work initiative which aims to partner communities with the City to battle unemployment and improve service delivery. “We have a few parks in the area,” Dlamini added.

“Wouldn’t it be better if we employed locals to cut the grass and maintain them, instead of paying someone from outside the area to do it?”

Dlamini grew up in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, and received a bursary to complete his B.Comm Accounting Degree at the University of the Witwaterstrand when he agreed to play for the varsity’s football team.

After completing his degree, his articles and clerkship, Dlamini found his true passion in founding and working for non-profit organisations. The first was the Tim Tebeila Foundation, founded by Dlamini in 2009, which creates and runs programmes which cater to the youth and their education. The second was the Road Safety Awareness Africa non-profit organisation, started by Dlamini in 2014, which aims to curb road injuries. He also founded his own business, DTX Capital, which is in the mining industry.

When he’s not spending time with his 20-month-old son, Zizi, he’s interacting with local communities, and spent Freedom Day this year cleaning and removing graffiti from Nautilus Park in Bloubosrand.

“We [the ANC] want to help solve problems within the community. Not just in this election year, but for many years to come. If I don’t do this, you know where I am so you can come shout at me,” he quipped.
