Theft out of motor vehicles still on the rise

FOURWAYS – Theft out of motor vehicles is still on the rise and community members are advised to follow caution when out and about.

Residents are warned to exercise caution as theft out of motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicles continue to rank high among crimes reported at the Douglasdale Police Station.

Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the station, said, “Motorists are advised to avoid parking their vehicles in areas where no security officers are operating, ensure that all doors and windows and properly locked before leaving their vehicle, and keep valuable items in their boot. They also need to be aware of criminals using jamming devices which are small and can look like a gate remote.”

He also called on the management of shopping centres in the area to improve their surveillance and security features for the safety of their shoppers. “The top six items criminals steal from vehicles are laptops, cellphones, handbags, wallets, cameras and money,” Muthan said.
