Mashaba calls out Tau for irregular expenditure

JOHANNESBURG – Mashaba wants a report from Mayor Tau about irregular expenditure.

DA mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba led a protest march outside Wanderers Stadium as Mayor Mpho Paks Tau give his end of term report on 6 July.

Mashaba said the protest was designed to show his party’s displeasure over the City of Johannesburg’s alleged unauthorised expenditure of R4.2 billion.

The protest was held during Tau’s end of term report to Johannesburg citizens.

Mashaba told Fourways Review in an exclusive interview that the City of Johannesburg was found to have improperly spent R4.2 billion by the Auditor General. He said yesterday that Tau was ‘a great gentleman and human being, but he has failed the people of Johannesburg’.

Mashaba said Tau, according to the Auditor General, presided over R4.2 billion in unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure in Johannesburg.

He added that the Auditor General had recommended an investigation to establish whether or not there was any corruption. “But we have heard nothing from Tau. He is very quiet.

“We are here to demand an explanation from Mayor Parks Tau on how he irregularly spent the R4.2 billion. He was asked to produce a report by the Auditor General but he seems to have ignored the directive.”

Hundreds of DA supporters in DA regalia picketed along Corlett Drive waving placards calling Mayor Tau irresponsible.

Mashaba added that business cannot just continue as usual after so much money has been improperly spent. “Look, this is public money we are talking about. Where is the accountability which the ANC preaches about? We are not interested in the fairy tales of massive development which Tau is talking about. We need a report of where R4.2 billion is,” concluded Mashaba.
