EFF chases DA from Leeuwkop protest

LEEUWKOP - DA not welcome at the EFF-led police protest.

Two aspiring councillors from the Democratic Alliance (DA) had to flee for their lives after being chased away by Economic Freedom Front (EFF) supporters when they attempted to join a protest at Leeuwkop Correctional Centre in support of the police.

Lerato Mpofu and Madelene Hicklin from the DA got it all wrong when they donned their DA T-shirts and joined the protest. “So Lerato and I were driving past Leeuwkop Prison [Correctional Centre] and saw a ‘Police lives matter’ protest. We put on DA T-shirts to join their protest and were chased away! There were EFF and trade union representatives there, but [the protesters] actually chased us away and told us that ‘they didn’t need our support’,” said Hicklin.

Ward 93 councillor, Annette Deppe dismissed the EFF action as posturing to reap support. “EFF were only there to garner support for themselves. They should work so hard because this is a voting station that the DA won from the ANC in 2006 and we won it again in 2011.”

“I don’t think that the EFF stands a chance of winning it. So please guys, in future, if you mean what you say then welcome anyone who wants to support the [South African Police Service],” said Deppe.

She added that her party’s Midrand Constituency embarked on a visible policing campaign to support the police to get more resources for the police station in her ward.

“It is under this premise that these two aspirant candidates felt it necessary to stop and support this picket they saw,” said Deppe.
