Samaritan brutally attacked by two men in parking lot

MAGALIESSIG - "I am telling this story as a warning to girls that they should be vigilant about who they drink with, and to men, you cannot expect women to sleep or leave with you just because you bought them drinks. We need to start respecting the word 'no'."

Douglasdale resident, Marvin Cohen, was brutally assaulted by two men in Montecasino’s parking lot in the early hours of 17 June, while he was trying to help out a group of girls who were refusing to go home with two men.

“Last week Thursday, I went out to Cantare at Montecasino to celebrate one of my boy’s birthdays and we had lots of fun,” he said.

“We had a good time but all good things obviously need to come to an end and I was leaving to go home. On my way out to the parking lot I ran into a group of girls in an elevator, we started talking and they told me they were not comfortable going home with the guys they had been drinking with, so I asked if I could help by walking them to fetch their stuff out of these guys’ car.”

He added that he knew he should have directed the girls to Montecasino’s security guards but instead he agreed to help out. “The girls approached the guys to get their stuff and the guys started becoming aggressive with them,” he said. “They did not want the girls to go anywhere because they had been buying them drinks all night. That is when I stepped in and tried to calm the situation down by telling the two guys to calm down as it was clear the girls did not want to leave with them.”

Cohen said he tried to run away when he realised that the two men were retrieving weapons out of their car but he was brutally attacked by them.

“The guards eventually stepped in and picked me up off of one of the guys I was wrestling with on the ground and put me in the elevator. That’s when he said I was cut really badly. I was then taken to Monte’s emergency response area and was bandaged while an ambulance was called to take me to hospital,” he said.

“I opened up a case… on 20 June and the two guys were then arrested on Tuesday morning, on 21 June, when they were at Montecasino again. They confessed to everything and now we wait for the case to go to court.

“I am telling this story as a warning to girls that they should be vigilant about who they drink with. And to the men – you cannot expect women to sleep with you or leave with you just because you bought them drinks.

“We need to start respecting the word ‘no’. Stop bringing our whole gender down. I thank God I am alive and I believe justice will be served.”

Douglasdale Police Station commander, Brigadier Lettie Hugo confirmed that Cohen opened an assault case at the Douglasdale Police Station and the two suspects appeared in Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 22 June.

Fourways Review approached Montecasino for comment. Read their statement here.
