Robbery suspect nabbed

DIEPSLOOT - Alert constable senses crime as it is being committed.

A sixth sense and strong instinct of a Diepsloot constable led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man shortly after staging an armed robbery at the Dieplsoot Mall recently.

An unidentified constable felt his hair rising as he was patrolling near the mall, which made him believe that something untoward was happening in the area.

Diepsloot Police Station spokesman, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela said the constable and his team stormed into the shopping mall only to be told that the prominent Roots Butchery had just been robbed by six armed men. He said an undisclosed amount of cash was taken from tellers at gunpoint.

He added that the team deployed its members in strategic positions in the mall before calling for back-up. “Soon thereafter, two suspicious-looking men were spotted in the vicinity of the mall. When stopped, one escaped, the remaining suspect was found in possession of a licensed handgun. He was later arrested through the aid of modern technology as well as information from an eyewitness,” said Mavimbela.

Police immediately launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects. More arrests are expected.

Diepsloot Police Station commander, Koena Moichela, applauded the constable and his team for their hard work and dedication.

Mavimbela added, “Notably, the same members are recent recipients of the commendation certificates issued by Moichela himself.”

In the meantime, the suspect will be charged with armed robbery while his identity is being verified. He is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
