Oscar Pistorius re-sentencing to begin

JOBURG – Sentencing proceedings of convicted murder Oscar Pistorius to be heard at the North Gauteng High Court.

The long legal battle for former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius could be nearing the end.

Murder sentencing proceedings are expected to get underway this morning at the North Gauteng High Court.

This will be not his first sentencing as he was formerly convicted for culpable homicide and was sentenced to five years in prison of which he only served 10 months. In December, the culpable homicide conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal and found Pistorius guilty of the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on 13 February 2016.

Pistorius tried to appeal the murder conviction with the Constitutional Court but leave to appeal was denied by the court in February this year. For his murder conviction, Pistorius faces a minimum sentence of 15 years. His defence team is expected to ask for a lenient sentence which could see him serve less time in prison, or even try for a suspended sentence.

His supporters are already outside the high court where he will be appearing shortly.

Some of the people have been weighing in on their views on the matter and others also shared what is happening at the court on twitter:
