DOUGLASDALE – Read to see who is nominated for the Top Cop Award

The police force is dominated by men, but sometimes a woman’s caring nature can make a world of a difference for many going through difficult circumstances.

Freda Boiles, head of the Douglasdale Volunteer Group applauded Constable Lebo Matlala for her compassion and dedication when working with the public.

Boiles said, “During the past month I have been involved with two very sensitive cases that were handled by Matlala. In the first case, a very distressed lady walked into the Client Service Centre one Monday morning. I could see this lady was deeply distressed and didn’t want to be there. I approached her and asked if I could assist her and she burst out crying and couldn’t control her emotions.”

Matlala noticed this and immediately came to assist the woman. “An hour later the lady came to me… and informed me that she had been raped and was scared of coming to the police as she thought nothing would be done… The woman also told me how Matlala had listened to her and was so empathetic. Her parting words to me were ‘God bless Matlala’,” Boiles said.

She also explained how Matlala had assisted an elderly couple who had just been robbed of personal belongings and money by three men on the William Nicol Drive off-ramp.

“The lady collapsed onto the floor and her husband informed us that she suffered from heart problems,” Boiles said.

“Matlala jumped over the counter and we lifted the lady and placed her on the benches. Matlala made sure that the lady didn’t swallow her tongue, she gently spoke to her husband regarding medication that was administered to her by her husband.”

By the time Lonehill paramedics arrived at the station, the woman’s blood pressure had dropped to a normal rate. Boiles added that the couple couldn’t thank Matlala enough for the love she had shown towards them.
