Know where you are in the city

JOHANNESBURG - Identify your surroundings by looking at Jozi's graffiti scene.

The city can be a daunting place to explore, but City Buzz is making it a little more fun to know your surroundings in Johannesburg.

With the number of reported crimes that take place, numerous taxis taking over the roads and thousands of people passing through the streets each day, it can all be quite overwhelming.

Certain landmarks and artworks can help you identify your surroundings and this particular piece is a longstanding reminder of the rich history of Johannesburg.

Do you know where this graffiti can be found?

This public art can be found in an area where a famous market was held over a long period of time and later, a theatre was named after it and was built where the market once was located.

The area is one where a new mall was recently opened by the Atterbury Group – and we’re not talking about the group’s recent success that is Mall of Africa, but rather a smaller feat for the small community.

A number of other attractions are found in the area as well and these are Mary Fitzgerald Square, where a number of concerts take place; Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, where the world of science comes to life; and World of SAB, where the public can see how South African beers are brewed.

If you didn’t already know, this public art can be found on the corner of Miriam Makeba and Lilian Ngoyi streets in Newtown.

This relatively safe neighbourhood is guarded by security at certain corners to ensure that the area remains friendly for visitors.

One can find refuge from the cold Johannesburg streets by heading to Newtown Junction, just one street over from the graffiti, or to the newly-erected City Lodge on the same street.
