Help dancer travel to New York for competition

LONEHILL – Lonehill resident, Tanner Bond qualifies to compete at the American Dance Awards in New York

Lonehill resident, Tanner Bond, has qualified to compete in the American Dance Awards which will take place in New York in July.

Bond will represent South Africa as one of the top two dancers in the teen category and will be participating in three solo performances, two lyrical and one jazz, as well as three group dances as part of the studio’s junior and senior competition teams.

Bond competed in the American Dance Awards regional competition in South Africa in September last year and was selected to compete in the national competition in New York.

Leander, Bond’s mom said, “Over the past few years, Tanner has reaped the rewards of her hard work by receiving distinctions in all her ballet exams, achieving outstanding results in her modern exams, as well as numerous accolades on the stage in festivals and competitions.”

In an attempt to raise funds, Leander, with the support of her daughter’s ballet studio, the Lonehill Dance Academy, and a few dancers from a school called Art of Motion hosted a high tea. Highly successful, the event helped raised half the amount needed for Bond’s travel expenses, however, she needs an additional R24 000 to travel to New York.

Despite her busy schedule, the 14-year-old also provides pamper parties for children in an attempt to raise funds.

Although Bond started ballet in preschool, she only started taking dance seriously when she was 11 when she started modern and jazz. At 12, Bond entered her first jazz solo competition and was placed second in the amateur jazz section (age 12 to 15). She entered two more jazz competitions that year and placed second and fifth.

Bond was exposed to contemporary dance for the first time when she auditioned for the Jozi Youth Dance Company last year, and danced at the Roodepoort Theatre in April last year and this year as part of the Jozi Youth Dance Company.
