Diepsloot murder suspect arrested

DIEPSLOOT - Robbery victim faces murder charge

A man was arrested in Diepsloot on 17 May for allegedly participating in the beating to death of a 29-year-old suspected robber.

The 35-year-old man, who is facing a murder charge, appeared in Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 19 May.

“It is reported that the deceased and a group of armed accomplices had broken into the suspect’s shop in the middle of the night in February. They allegedly pointed firearms at two people who were found sleeping in the shop, before escaping with, among other items, cash,” said Warrant Officer, Daniel Mavimbela.

An eyewitness told police that two men, including the 35-year-old suspect, assaulted the deceased with an object upon apprehending him on the rooftop. It is believed that more people later joined in on the fatal assault, which had continued after the deceased had fallen to the ground.

Mavimbela said paramedics who attended to the scene said the deceased had suffered serious head injuries.

The investigating officer, Sergeant Masilo Magoro, is appealing to members of the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of more suspects.

Details: Sergeant Magoro 011 367 6354; 072 645 4613.
