Music teacher seeks instruments for his classes

ALEXANDRA – A music teacher is seeking for music instrument for his class of 500 pupils in three schools.

A music teacher in Alexandra is appealing to good Samaritans to come to the aid of his more than 500 music pupils at three schools in the township with various music instruments.

William Bapela, music teacher, founder and chairperson of Persistent Music Project, said he desperately needs the equipment and instruments in order to fulfil his dream of restoring the image of Alexandra, which was known as the ‘Place of Rhythm’ in the 60s and 70s.

“It is my dream that we restore this dignified image of our beloved township which is today better known for all the wrong reasons such as crime, drugs, filth and rats,” Bapela said.

“I think one such activity in restoring the dignity of Alexandra is by bringing back the music and theatre vibe of the 1970s and back and this project seeks to do exactly that.”

Bapela has 503 pupils that he teaches music to in three primary schools – Carter, Ikage and Iphutheng. “I teach them five days a week during their arts and culture period and, if all goes well, I want to extend the project to high schools as well,” he said.

Founded in 2010, Bapela said the Persistent Music Project was a registered NGO which is appealing to potential donors to assist it with music instruments of all kinds to help teach the children.
