Police operation nets suspects

COSMO CITY - Suspects are arrested for robbery and alleged rape of a six-year-old girl.

Three men aged between 18 and 36 were arrested on 2 May in Diepsloot for allegedly launching an armed attack on a man who was withdrawing cash at Diepsloot Mall on International Workers’ Day.

Diepsloot police spokesman, Warrant Officer Mavimbela said the victim’s two cellphones were recovered during the arrest. “About R1 000 was taken during the robbery. The suspects will be charged with aggravating robbery,” said Mavimbela.

Regarding other crimes in the area, Mavimbela said two 18-year-old males were arrested in Cosmo City after a six-year-old girl had pointed them out to a caregiver as her alleged rapists. “The caregiver had inquired from the victim after she noticed a foreign substance on the victim’s undies. The two suspects will face charges of rape,” said Mavimbela. The suspects will appear in court soon.

The police in Joburg West Cluster, which monitors areas including Diepsloot, are concerned that, in spite of the numerous attempts they made to discourage communities, especially in Diepsloot, from renting out properties or parts thereof to undocumented individuals, be it inter-provincial or foreign migrants, the trend seems to continue unabated. A good number of suspects that were caught have no form of identification.

“We call upon our people to act responsibly in this regard. Do a background check before renting out your properties to individuals. Some of them could be fugitives from justice,” advised Mavimbela.
