Hammer suspect will be arrested, says WO Mavimbela

DIEPSLOOT – Police say they are making progress in the hammer- attack case.

Diepsloot police have come out to explain the circumstances surrounding the case of a 26-year-old man who sustained serious injuries after being attacked with a hammer in the face.

Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela confirmed that a docket was opened. “Yes, it is true that we are investigating a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm,” said Mavimbela.

The mother of the victim, Rose Ranko, had complained to this paper on 3 April about the police’s failure to immediately arrest the suspect. Her son, Israel, sustained a broken jaw and lost two teeth on 2 April when he attempted to stop a street fight. She said the suspect was still a free man even after admitting to attacking her son with a hammer.

Apparently the police need a medical officer to complete a J38 form before they can make an arrest. “Note that we are keeping in close contact with our clients in this matter. They are happy with the progress of the investigation, and understand steps that need to be taken in order for a strong case to be built,” explained concluded Mavimbela.
