Councillor reflects on freedom

FOURWAYS – With 22 years of freedom under the country’s belt, Ward 132 DA councillor Annette Deppe shared her take on freedom thus far.

According to Deppe, not much has changed in the country since Freedom Day, 27 April in 1994, even though it is still religiously celebrated.

“Regardless of nothing much being done for people in the community, the day is still very important. One would ask the question are people really free from the shackles of the past? You just have to look at Ivory Park, Kaalfontein and Diepsloot, the overcrowding of informal settlements, as they still do not have electricity or decent plumbing – even after 22 years. Freedom has not materialised for most of the community,” Deppe said.

Deppe added that community members most certainly have more rights and privileges than before and she believes that freedom is when you live in a crime-free society, a corruption-free country, and have decent education systems that work for everyone.

“There should be growth in the community, more jobs being created and service delivery being top of the agenda for the mayor. Until these things are sorted out we will never be a free country,” she stressed.

“These are still not happening and that is why the community needs to vote for change.”

The 2016 South African Municipal Elections will be held on 3 August for all districts and local municipalities in all nine provinces.
