GEM brings a sparkle to Lonehill

LONEHILL – GEM joins forces with Lonehill Residents Association

Fresh from the success of two community clean-ups, one in Melville and the other in Greenside, NPO Going the Extra Mile (GEM), joined forces with Lonehill Residents Association to give the northern suburb a magical makeover.

Residents, community organisations and do-gooders came together to paint, clean, sweep, scrape and brush the suburb spotless. Once completed, volunteers enjoyed snacks and drinks in the parking lot of Lonehill Shopping Centre while getting to know one another.

All tools and materials were provided by GEM, the residents association and a number of business sponsors such as the Lonehill Residents Association, Flight Centre, Sorbet, Pauls Gate, Liquor City, Fidelity Security, Mugg & Bean, Vikrams, Cape Town Fish Market, Vovo Telo and Levingers Dry Cleaning.

Each participant earned 100 GEMs (equivalent to R100) and will be able to spend them on various digital rewards including data, airtime, electricity or movie tickets.

David Shields, co-founder of the organisation said, “Not only will our volunteers get to do good, meet awesome people and clean up their community, they’ll be rewarded with a token of appreciation to spend as they wish.”

Volunteers also collected clothes and toys which will be donated to Diepsloot Word Centre Church, Witkoppen Clinic and the Refilwe community project.

Shelly Miller of the residents association said the clean-up was part of an education programme that they would be running with the community about litter and working together to keep Lonehill clean.
