UPDATE: Rabbi set to appear in Randburg Magistrates’ Court today

SUNNINGHILL - Rabbi Eliezer Berland said to be on the run since 2012.

Rabbi Eliezer Berland, a fugitive who was arrested in Sunninghill on 7 April, is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 14 April.

Berland, who has been on the run since 2012, is wanted for a number of sex offences that allegedly occurred in Israel.

According to EWN, the 80-year-old rabbi was arrested after being admitted to a Johannesburg hospital. However, he was rushed back to hospital two days after his arrest.

It is believed that he has evaded arrest twice in South Africa, once last year during his stay at a Midrand hotel and again after a high-speed car chase. The rabbi has slipped in and out of the country, with his latest entry just a few weeks ago.

EWN also reported that Berland was arrested in Amsterdam in 2015, but managed to escape and re-enter South Africa a few weeks ago.

It is understood that Israel wants the rabbi to be extradited to face charges for alleged sex crimes.
