Theft out of motor vehicles on the rise, be vigilant

DOUGLASDALE – Police urge motorists to keep valuables in the boot

Once again, Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale Police Station, has warned motorists of a sudden rise in theft out of motor vehicles at shopping centres.

According to Muthan, it has increased in all shopping centres across Gauteng, and he urged motorists to remain vigilant at all times. “Motorists need to ensure that they place all valuables in their boot. This is not a new problem and many shopping centres have been made aware of the issue,” Muthan said.

He urged management at shopping centres to beef up their security and to add CCTV cameras in their parking lots.

Muthan said the top six items criminals stole from vehicles are laptops, cellphones, handbags, wallets, cameras and cash.
