Beware of hijacking scam

FOURWAYS – Douglasdale police warn residents of hijacking scam

Douglasdale police have urged community members to keep their wits about them to prevent being targeted by criminals in a new number plate hijacking scam currently making the rounds in the community.

According to Warrant officer Balan Muthan, head of communication of the Douglasdale Police Station, hijackers follow their victims to a parking lot, wait for them to leave the vehicle and then remove their number plate.

Once their targets return and drive off, the hijackers follow their suspects, overtake them to display their ‘missing’ number plate and hijack them once they stop to take back their missing number plate.

Muthan said, “It is a very well-rehearsed, organised plan and everything happens very quickly. Other motorists may not even be aware of what’s happening as you have stopped the car yourself.”

Muthan urged motorists who found themselves in such a situation to drive to their nearest police station or contact their nearest security provider. Muthan confirmed that zero incidents had yet been reported in Fourways.
