Diepsloot Police Station spokesman, warrant officer Daniel Mavimbela revealed in a statement that the 32-year-old man was arrested in Ext 11 on 6 March following a tip-off from a member of the public.
“When the suspect was first located, an initial body search could not reveal where the handgun was hidden. The police had to conduct a second body search, which was more thorough. The handgun was then found safely tucked away in the suspect’s undies,” said Mavimbela.
A loaded magazine was also found on the suspect. The suspect will be charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
“We would like to offer to the public a heartfelt thank you for the support through information that enabled us to catch the suspect. Together we can do more,” reads part of the police statement.
Diepsloot police have cultivated a culture of being thorough when conducting body searches on suspects. Early last year, a suspect in a house robbery was also found hiding a firearm inside his underwear. He has since appeared in court and the case against him is still sub judice.
