Lanseria tavern murder suspects nabbed in Diepsloot

DIEPSLOOT - Two men aged 25 and 30 were arrested on 28 March on suspicion of the murder of a 30-year-old man following a confrontation at a tavern in Malatji Village, Lanseria, during the early hours of the morning.

In a statement released by Diepsloot Police Station’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela announced that the suspects were nabbed during an Easter police operation which was conducted in the populous township of Johannesburg North.

He said the deceased and his friends, all from a neighbouring suburb, visited the tavern.

Their visit turned sour when they were threatened by four men. “Later, they were confronted by at least four local men, including the two suspects. An altercation started. It was followed by a fight inside the tavern,” said Mavimbela.

Mavimbela added that the police were informed that the fight continued outside the tavern and the deceased and his friends had attempted to flee from their attackers.

“Unfortunately, the victim was caught and assaulted with an assortment of dangerous weapons,” Mavimbela said. He revealed that a broken golf club and beer bottles were recovered from the scene.

The spokesperson said the victim died on the scene after sustaining serious upper body injuries. The suspects will be charged with murder.

The arrest of the two suspects follows Easter weekend operations in Diepsloot where 38 other suspects were nabbed for various offences including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, illegal gambling, possession of dagga and rape.

The suspects that are still due for court will appear before a Randburg magistrate soon.
