Ending hunger one meal pack at a time

SUNNINGHILL – The Ambassadors Youth Group of the Sandton Seventh-Day Adventist Church, in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg, packed 20 000 meals in support of the Stop Hunger Now initiative.

Dudu Ndlovu of the church’s communications department said the 20 000 meals were enough to give 77 children five meals a week for an entire year. The meals are made up of rice, lentils, soya and a vitamin supplement pack.

David Soutter, ambassador director for the church said, “As the ambassadors, we decided to provide labour in support of this wonderful initiative. We realise the need in our communities to support those who are less fortunate than us and this provided a perfect opportunity not only for our youth to get involved but also for the younger children as well as the parents.”

The meal packaging event is a fun and engaging way for volunteers to be part of the drive to end child hunger. Sponsored by donors, the programme focuses on getting food packs to vulnerable and hungry children up to five years old and to Early Childhood Development centres in rural areas.

The food is distributed on different days to various communities on a weekly basis.

One box is made up of 36 packets of food (one packet can feed up to six adults), and is enough to feed a family of six for 36 days.

Kerry Mawson, volunteer ambassador of Stop Hunger Now, who led the activity with the ambassadors said, “This was an awesome opportunity to work with such a vibrant team of young people. We are extremely grateful for the support received from the ambassador group as we rely heavily on communities to help pack the food.”
