Girl power at networking breakfast

JOBURG - The Marion on Nicol set the scene for the Dell Women's Entrepreneur Network Breakfast on 17 March.

“Dell is actively trying to promote female entrepreneurship and specifically chose South Africa for their next summit because of the entrepreneurship drive in this country,” said Dell spokesperson, Mariaan Christian.

Many feminist movements have encouraged female entrepreneurship. Johanna Mukoki, CEO of Travel with Flair, spoke at the breakfast and proved that she has put every feminist’s dream into practice.

Mukoki is not only a successful businesswoman but a modern, independent entrepreneur. She said she began her business in the 90s and has since grown her business to massive proportions. The successful businesswoman stressed that she wants to ensure she remains ahead of her game and travels frequently to learn more about changes in technology.

The women who attended the breakfast were both wide-eyed and in awe when Mukoki described an event which occurred 10 days after the birth of her first child. Mukoki said she had an important pitch 10 days after giving birth and refused to allow motherhood to get in the way of her business. She took her child along with her and left the infant in the care of her co-workers. When the meeting was finished, her staff told her that the newborn had been crying for more than two hours. Mukoki explained that she had to make sacrifices to succeed.

This entrepreneur also displays the empathy that is synonymous with the female spirit and is involved with the Salvation Army South Africa.

Newly-appointed general manager of Dell South Africa, Doug Woolley, also spoke at the breakfast and expressed how Dell is determined to promote female entrepreneurship through the summit which will be also held in Cape Town in June.

The women who attended the event enjoyed the breakfast and felt inspired. Even after 9am, when the event was supposed to end, many women stayed behind and continued to network and get to know one another.
