Car break-ins on the rise

DOUGLASDALE – According to Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for Douglasdale Police Station, the high number of thefts out of motor vehicle incidents at shopping centres and malls in and around Fourways is a major concern.

“We appeal to shopping centres and malls to improve their security surveillance systems for their patrons in order to help curb such crimes,” Muthan said.

Muthan provided tips to use to avoid becoming a victim:

  •  Park your car in a place where there is security video surveillance.
  •  Before you leave your vehicle, make sure all the windows and doors are locked.
  •  Do not only activate your car alarm and walk away, but double check if your car is securely locked.
  •  Make sure that all valuable items are safely hidden.
  •  If you are going to leave your car unattended, make sure you park the vehicle in a busy public space.
  •  Even when parking your vehicle in your garage or on your property, make sure that it is securely locked.
