Total South Africa forced to close recycling centre in Douglasdale

DOUGLASDALE – After four years of witnessing community members abuse its recycling facility by dumping all sorts of rubbish and waste materials into the bins provided, Total South Africa has confirmed that it would remove the recycling bins situated at both Total Garages in Douglasdale.

The bins are located at the Total Garage by the Pick n Pay and at the Total Garage Village.

According to Nadia Vosloo, brand and dealer communications manager for Total South Africa, the decision to remove the bins was not an easy one to make, but it was necessary.

“These bins were not designed to take other materials and it defeated the objective of recycling plastic, glass and paper. This action posed a health and safety risk,” Vosloo said.

Vosloo added that the collection company, who are specialists in the recycling of plastic, glass and paper, were not equipped to handle other waste materials and it was not their mandate to collect general waste.

The removal of the recycling bins will impact a number of residents who regularly use the facility.

Jean Liddiard, a resident in the area said, “We recycle plastic, glass and tin at least once a week. We have no idea where we can recycle now as there are so few recycling stations in the Fourways area.”

Ward 115 councillor, Chris Santana explained that he was aware of the problem and that he was in talks with Pikitup to establish a recycling centre in the area.

Santana was unable to give a time frame as to when this would happen.

The recycling bins will be removed on 15 March.
