Safety tips for open show houses

JOBURG  – Following a reported armed robbery at an open show house in Hyde Park, Sandton police have cautioned community members in Fourways and surrounding areas to be more vigilant when hosting or attending an open show house.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Sandton Police Station said, “Three armed men wearing balaclavas and gloves targeted people at a open house [in Hyde Park] and robbed them of their possessions.”

Maphakela explained that the suspects then fled the scene in a blue Jetta with fake registration plates.

Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale Police Station, provided the following security tips for residents attending open houses:

  •  Get a reputable real estate company to host the open house
  •  Make sure you engage with your local security company and ensure that a guard is present at all times
  •  Don’t carry large amounts of cash as you are only viewing the house, not buying it.
