Chartwell residents explore nature at their conservancy

CHARTWELL- Chartwell Country Estates (CCE) Board, Conservancy and Wetlands sub-committee held a Conservancy River Trail day where residents were given the opportunity to explore their own piece of nature.

The day also served to highlight the importance of preserving the conservancy from being sold for development.

The river trail event was the first for CCE residents, friends and neighbours who explored the beautiful park-like riverbanks of the Klein Jukskei River. The day offered informative signposts and explanations of special natural features of the area.

“It was a wonderful day and a great success and it was amazing how much there is to see within a relatively small area,” Francoise Harrison, chairperson of the sub-committee said.

“The preservation of our conservancy is so important to Chartwell and indeed to all the surrounding areas.”

According to the chairperson of the board, Ben Jowitt, Chartwell Country Estates was granted conservancy status last year, encompassing two registered wetlands and the Klein Jukskei River on its western border. “Naturally this designation comes with responsibilities, but it also carries restrictions – which are both important and valuable to anyone involved in real estate in our suburb,” Jowitt said.

He added that CCE was a registered Section 21 non-profit organisation with a very astute and involved board which was actively engaged in developing CCE as an independent country lifestyle estate. He expressed that the river trail event also highlighted the plight of larger rural residential properties, including those within the CCE conservancy.

Jowitt acknowledged the involvement of the City of Johannesburg with the issuing of its Regional Spatial Development Framework (RSDF) policies and guidelines document. “This [RSDF] supports and protects environments such as our conservancy and keeps it safe for current and future generations.

“On our watch, and with the help of our dedicated membership, our conservancy will remain a green sanctuary in an ever increasing, urbanised jungle.”
