JOBURG - The City of Johannesburg and Pikitup have condemned the unlawful action taken by South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) on 9 March.

Spokesperson for Pikitup, Jacky Mashapu said the unlawful action was against the spirit of the ongoing engagement with Samwu and the concessions made by the City of Johannesburg and Pikitup to accommodate the union’s demands. “Every effort is being made to speedily address this illegal work stoppage,” Mashapu said.

Pikitup apologised for any inconvenience caused as a result of the illegal work stoppage, which has disrupted refuse collection services across all regions of the City.

“We appeal to residents and business owners to continue to leave their bins and excess waste outside as contingency plans are in place to collect the refuse,” Mashapu said.

Regarding the refuse collection schedule, residents and business owners can call the Pikitup regional manager responsible for their area on the following numbers:
