Generation Earth inspires youth
JOHANNESBURG – Generation Earth, an environmental programme for the youth of South Africa, held a number of regional meetings to help get local schools and universities involved in green activations.
The programme aims to guide and develop young, local activists in order to mould them into eco-conscious leaders and inspire them to get involved in environmental awareness, activism and volunteerism within their school and community.
Nikita Lagler, administrator at the Generation Earth head office, explained that the programme was started in 2011. “We started Miss Earth South Africa and we were working in communities and felt that we needed to add value to the group of teenagers in South Africa and wanted to connect with them.”
The regional meetings take place every year, and this year’s focus is on four different environmental challenges including water management, food security, energy efficiency and waste management.
“The regional meetings are for the students and teachers to learn about the visions for the new year and what projects they need to do or aspire to do,” explained Lagler.
At the meetings, the young members of Generation Earth are encouraged to start their own projects or campaigns around one of the four environmental challenges and to find solutions. The programme has partnered with Tsogo Sun and Nedbank to get things going and to get the schools and students excited about their green ventures.
Generation Earth is building a movement that nurtures and mobilises young minds to not only be informed about the environment and the challenges that face our planet but also to act and be responsible. It is not restricted to students but is open to anyone who is interested in helping the environment.
