Gekco needs feedback from all residents and property owners in Kyalami

KYALAMI – The Greater Kyalami Conservancy (Gekco) is currently updating their records.

Gekco is urgently appealing to all property owners in the areas of Kyalami Agricultural Holdings, Glenferness, Beaulieu and Sun Valley to indicate whether they would like their properties included in the conservancy.

The conservancy is recognised in municipal and provincial policy as unique and important from an ecological and equestrian perspective and is working to protect wetlands and important corridors for wildlife.

Inclusion in the conservancy does not create any additional restrictions on properties, as restrictions are defined in City bylaws and environmental legislation.

The legal mandate of the conservancy is being questioned by developers who would rather see development take place in this area and, as a result, input from property owners is vital.

Property owners interested in being included within the boundary of the conservancy can respond to Gekco via e-mail with the following information:

  •  property number(s)
  •  Are you the registered owner of the property?
  •  Yes (to be included in the conservancy) and
  •  No (to be excluded from the conservancy).

The five pillars of Gekco include sustainability, awareness, conservation, research and collaboration.

The conservancy works with authorities to highlight the environmental and equestrian sensitivities of the area through policy and comments on development applications. The conservancy also promotes resource-efficient technology and advises landowners on how sustainable development can be achieved

Awareness is created through community events, educational talks and newsletters.

Gekco also promotes the protection of wetlands, wildlife corridors and open space for equestrian and recreational purposes – all this is done through their work with authorities, residents’ associations and neighbouring communities.

The conservancy continuously studies the ecology of the Kyalami area with wetland specialists, ecologists and organisations such as the Endangered Wildlife Trust and Gauteng Conservancy Association.
