Taxis now drive on William Nicol pavements

FOURWAYS - Not only does traffic during peak hour build up tremendous frustration for motorists on William Nicol Drive, but negligent taxi drivers who drive on pedestrian sidewalks also add to the irritation.

Recently, a concerned resident shared pictures with Fourways Review of taxi drivers breaking the law. The resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, stated that due to the traffic lights at the intersection of William Nicol and Mulbarton drives being out of order, mostly during rush-hour traffic, taxi drivers have now created a new illegal lane as they drive on pavements and endanger pedestrians.

“New taxi and bus stops have been provided, but [taxi drivers] will still stop anywhere they feel like, but then again how can passengers wait there if they are driving on the pavement?” the concerned resident asked.

According to Metro police spokesperson, Chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar, residents are urged to contact the director of Metro police operations, Stephen Mosimane, if they witness such acts on the roads. “We urge community members to report the matter by e-mailing the director on stevem@joburg.org.za. That way the matter can be dealt with,” Minnaar said.

“Taxi drivers or motorists found guilty of driving on a pedestrian sidewalk would receive a R500 fine; and if caught driving on the wrong side of the road, as well as driving across a dividing strip or over a traffic island, motorists will receive a R1 000 fine, this also applies to taxi drivers.”
