A year of animal rescues leads to a lack of funds
BRYANSTON - A year of successful rescues for Bryanston-based animal welfare organisation, Wags and Whiskers, has led to an ever-expanding vet's bill which they need the public's help to pay.
The organisation is hosting an event, Rock Royalty, at The Barnyard Theatre in Rivonia in aid of their rescue efforts and to pay their vet’s bill with Vorna Valley Animal Hospital.
According to Robyn Sayers, of Wags and Whiskers, their adoption fees only cover vaccinations, sterilisations and deworming. Should an animal be in need of an operation, the financial burden falls on the organisation itself.
Last year the organisation rescued a number of animals who needed to be hospitalised.
Some of these were Violet who came in with four puppies, she gave birth to 10 but six were given away by her previous owners. She had broken her knee during her pregnancy and needed an operation to insert a pin which was unsuccessful and she needed a second knee operation. Luckily, she was adopted and her new home is on a spacious property in Cullinan.
Rexy was a victim of a hit and run on the Marlboro offramp and Wags and Whiskers stepped in after Emer-G-Med paramedics stabilised him. Three of Rexy’s legs were fractured in the collision and he also had open wounds on his legs. He underwent the necessary procedures to repair his legs and was on cage rest until he was eventually adopted by a family in Olivedale.
Neveah was rescued off a highway close to Lenasia. She was covered in mange and ticks and it was discovered that she had been living off rubbish. Neveah has now recovered physically but is still being treated for behavioural issues.
The last rescue of 2015 were two litters of puppies who were rescued from Mooinooi in the North West province. The puppies had parvovirus and unfortunately two out of the seven puppies died. However, the rest found loving homes.
Sayers said while the vet had been very reasonable with their rates, the organisation had still to settle a bill of R36 000.
“We really would love to pay off our vet’s bill and continue to help animals,” she said.
“We’ve put too much blood, sweat and tears into this rescue organisation to just give up now.”
Tickets for the fundraising event are R185 per person and a free photo shoot is up for grabs to the person who buys the most tickets.
