Congested R511 becoming an 8-lane road

DIEPSLOOT - The development of Tanganani Extension 14 in Diepsloot is going on as scheduled and has now reached another phase.

The R511, which is what William Nicol Drive becomes, is in the process of being developed into two four-lane roads.

The site is currently under the wheels of heavy graders, and construction workers were seen milling around on the R511 by the Fourways Review news team.

The first phase of the development was the construction of two gigantic pedestrian bridges crossing the R511, prompting residents to inquire what the imposing structures were for.

Project director of Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, Shingai Mpinyuri divulged at the time that the twin bridges, which were built at a cost of R54 million, would link Diepsloot and Tanganani Ext 14 – which is still to be built.

Mpinyuri revealed that the development of Tanganani Ext 14 started in December last year. The new development will see new RDP houses being built opposite Diepsloot. The vacant area is currently being used as a worshipping site by members of the Apostolic Church.

Spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Transport Sipho Tshabalala confirmed that massive construction work was underway in the Diesploot area. Tshabalala, however, could not quantify the value of the projects being rolled out in the dusty settlement.

MEC for Education Panyaza Lusefi announced last year that a hospital is one of the facilities to be built in Tanganani Ext 14.

Diepsloot councillor Refilwe Mathebula expressed her appreciation over the widening of R511 which she said was long overdue.

Mathebula commented, “The traffic congestion on that road during peak hours is just maddening and people will definitely get relief from the new [road].” said Mathebula.
